At 11:00 the phone rang at Susan's desk. Her neighbor called to tell her that her mother had made a pot of tea , but forgot to turn off the burner. The Fire Department quickly put out the fire, but the kitchen was destroyed and there was substantial damage to the adjacent rooms. Her mother was unhurt, but she couldn't remember anything about the morning.
It took Susan 45 minutes to drive to her house. She knew her mother was becoming more forgetful, and since she moved in with Susan, she no longer had the chance to spend time with her old friends. Susan had to call her to remind her to take her medications, but at least half the calls went unanswered. She was not eating the sandwich Susan prepared each morning and she looked pale and gaunt.
